Calgary Neighbourhoods - Southwest
Downtown Calgary
Downtown Calgary is comprised of not one, but actually THREE communities. Its borders are the Elbow River on the east, 14th St W on the west, Eau Claire to the north and the CPR tracks to the south. The 3 communities are the downtown West End, the Commercial Core and the East Village, with the neighbourhoods of Eau Claire, Chinatown and the Beltline considered part of downtown. Compared to most cities of its size, Calgary's downtown has a small population - 10,000 in 2003. Residents in the area tend to leave their cars home, as the local LRT is relatively cheap.
Mount Royal
Made up of both upper and lower Mount Royal, this neighbourhood is situated in the Elbow River Valley. Upper Mount Royal is well established and one of the wealthiest neighbourhoods in Calgary. Lower Mount Royal is closely associated with the Beltline community in Calgary; both are home to hip 20-somethings and are within walking distance of downtown Calgary.
Scarboro
Running along the southwest of downtown Calgary is the neighbourhood of Scarboro. Similar to Upper Mount Royal, this neighbourhood is wealthy and well established.
Glengarry
Established during the 50s and 60s, this community targets Calgary's middle class with mid-priced single family homes. Glengarry has a large number of public and private schools in the community as well as the main campus of Mount Royal College in the southern region.
Glenbrook
The Glenbrook community is close to both the Glenmore Reservoir and Mount Royal College. The borders of this community are 26th Ave, Glenmore Trail, Crowchild Trail and Sarcee Trail. Built in the 60s and 70s, the area is typified by its nice mix of single family homes and low-rise apartments.
South Calgary & Currie Barracks (Garrison Woods)
Between 26th and 50th Avenues and 14th St and Crowchild are the communities of South Calgary and Currie Barracks. Made up of single-family and townhomes, this community is undergoing major redevelopment. Currie Barracks - the community closest to the old military base - is now branded as Garrison Woods since the exodus of the armed forces.
Lakeview
Snuggling the Glenmore Tail and the T'suu T'ina First Nation is Lakeview. This community is known for its easy access to the Elbow Valley and its view of the Rockies.
Oak Ridge and Pump Hill
On the south of Glenmore are the distinct and individual communities of Oak Ridge and Pump Hill. The majority of development in the area occurred during the 1980s, although these neighbourhoods have been around since the mid-1950s. Pump Hill is well known as a wealthy neighbourhood, while Oak Ridge features more affordable housing.
Woodbine
Located near Fish Creek Provincial Park, Woodbine is a sleepy community of single-family homes. Established in the 60s, the community came of age during the Calgary building boom of the 1980s. The region boasts 5 public schools and 3 private ones.
Evergreen, Millrise, Shawnessy
West of Macleod Trail are the neighbourhoods of Evergreen, Millrise and Shawnessy. Known largely as young-family oriented communities, these neighbourhoods are relatively new themselves - construction first began in the 80s. The region currently has public elementary school services.
Patterson Heights
This new neighbourhood is northwest of Broadcast Hill. The homes in this neighbourhood are inspired by the city of San Francisco. Prices range from $120,000 up to $300,000.
Richmond Hill
South of Broadcast Hill is the Richmond Hill neighbourhood. Development began in 1990 and the community covers 290 acres of land. Richmond Hill is serviced by Glenmorgan and Glenbrook elementary schools, A. E. Cross Junior High and Ernest Manning High.
Signal Hill
Located in the centre of Broadcast Hill, the community of Signal Hill has been under development since 1990. The neighbourhood's southern border is along Battalion Park which honours the WW I soldiers who trained there. Students attend the same schools as students from Richmond Hill (above).
Somerset
The borders of this new community are 6th St, 14th St, 152nd Ave and the Marquis of Lorne Trail.
