The street names become decidedly British as one enters this small, circular section of Southwest Calgary. Thematically named streets through Britannia include Elizabeth Road, Coronation Drive, and Edinburgh Boulevard. It's not immediately clear why such a concept was applied here, although the idea is carried out fully in local architecture and landscaping, which pays tribute to a variety of British styles.
A mainly residential community, Britannia is bordered by the Elbow River and Elbow Drive, which provides easy access to downtown Calgary, about four kilometres north. A small commercial district, Britannia Plaza, offers a perfect small-scale urban shopping circuit, with a market, home accessories store, a women's fashion boutique, and a bookstore, among other shops. Residents here enjoy a hill-topped neighbourhood with great views of the Calgary cityscape and the Elbow River Valley. Local parks include Riverdale Park, Crescent Park, and Calgary Golf and Country Club.
