While some believe the building of the Langevin Bridge in 1885 was where the name came from, Bridgeland actually was named after the company Dominion Bridge Company, which operated and employed many Calgarians at the time. Back then Bridgeland was a red-light district that wasn't part of Calgary. The old General Hospital, which was opened in 1910 and demolished in the 1998, is now the site of a large condo development (The Bridges).
Bridgeland is a pedestrian-friendly community that was recently listed as one of "Calgary's five most livable neighbourhoods" in Fast Forward Weekly Magazine. The southern portion of Bridgeland is full of shops and labeled "Little Italy" due to its many wonderful Italian restaurants. Also, nearby is St. Patrick's Island, Calgary Zoo, and several sports and recreation facilities.
