Google Street View comes to Calgary

Jim Sparrow Calgary Real EstateDon't look now but Google Street View is coming to Calgary (and 10 other major Canadian cities) soon. Google Street View gives users the ability to see street-level views of streets, buildings & other landmarks from Google maps. The service has been available for some time in nine countries including Australia, Britain, France & the US but its Canadian deployment has been delayed by privacy issues.

Google Street View Car CalgaryA car much like the one pictured here drives around the city capturing 360 degree views from the street-level. Ten days ago people in Toronto spotted Chevrolet Cobalts cruising the streets, modified with cameras on a large tripod mounted to the roof.

Farrell Plans to close Memorial Drive

Jim Sparrow Calgary Real EstateEarlier this week it was revealed that Alderman Druh Farrell had approached the City of Calgary's road department with a proposal to close down two of the four lanes of Memorial Drive on Sundays in August. Acting on Farrell's suggestion the City has approved closing both eastbound lanes of Memorial, between 3rd & 7th Streets SW, for pedestrian use.

According to Farrell "It's about creating a healthy city, a vibrant city and giving people the opportunity to go out and enjoy the river". Other's aren't quite as supportive of the plan. Alderman Ric McIver supports people getting out into the fresh air but says closing part of Memorial Drive isn't the answer. "There are some bad ideas and this is a very bad idea," says McIver.
